3 Things to do while in Edinburgh from ETCV (Part 1)
Written by Andrew Brotherston
Anyone that visits Edinburgh is spoiled for choice with the vast amount of activities. Our clients frequently ask what we recommend to do during their evenings or weekend while they are visiting Edinburgh. So, we thought it would be great to share a small list of things to do that you’ll enjoy.
Naturally, a first-time visitor to Scotland’s capital will want to see some of the main places to visit whether that be the historic fortress that is Edinburgh Castle; the mile-long shopping strips of Princes Street and George Street; or Arthur’s Seat, a dormant volcano with the most incredible views over the city.
Instead, this guide focuses on fun things to do and attractions in the medieval Old Town of Edinburgh including the city’s best tour company, an escape room and a must-see chocolate shop with a twist. Over the past year, we have featured these amazing local businesses in our quarterly newsletters. They have even been kind enough to donate prizes in the past for newsletter competitions or for our yearly Wear It Pink raffle.
1. Can You Escape?
First up we have Can You Escape, an escape room a few doors down from ETCV on St Mary’s Street.
For those of you wondering ‘What is an escape room?’; it’s a group game where your team are locked in a themed room faced with a series of challenges and puzzles that need to be solved to help lead to your escape. But, you only have 60 minutes to escape otherwise you’re locked in! (Or until someone lets you out…)
Can You Escape has a choice of two themes – Operation Spellbound and Operation Odyssey. Choose between bringing peace to King Arthur’s land by breaking the spells of legendary magicians, or a space mission on the International Space Station where you have to save your crew after a meteor impact.
The team here at ETCV had a staff night out a few years ago while also a few clients have been down after their training, with everyone in agreement it was one of the best escape rooms they’ve played in Edinburgh. This is a great immersive experience perfect for a team-building activity or a family day out as it caters for 2-16 people.
2. Edinburgh Ghost Tour – Mercat Tours
Edinburgh is a culturally diverse city on the surface, but you may not realise the Old Town is built on top of another city. Mercat Tours have exclusive access to the Blair Street Underground Vaults and operate one of the best ghost tours down there.
With 20 different tours to choose from, there will definitely be something that will grab your attention. Mercat operates daily history and ghost walking tours along Edinburgh’s Old Town, the Royal Mile and the Underground Vaults. If you’re looking for a recommendation, some of the more popular tours are the Historic Underground, Treasure of the Old Town or Tour & Whisky Tasting.
Again, this activity is great for team building, or even do alone, with the last tours going on until 10pm. Read more about Edinburgh’s underground city and the ghost tour from our September Newsletter. You never know – you might see something you can’t explain…
3. The Chocolatarium
This isn’t just a chocolate shop on the High Street, this a chance to experience and learn about the entire chocolate-making process. The Chocolatarium is a new and rather niche shop that offers an amazing Chocolate Tour Experience – a 90-minute experience split into three parts: learning, making and tasting.
Your chocolate guide will run you through an interactive teaching approach to the history of chocolate and the chocolate-making process. Now for the fun part… you get to make your own chocolate bar! Pick a Scottish-themed mould and choose from over 25 delicious toppings to make the most unique and delicious creation you can.
Lastly, you’ll be led into a room with over 30 varieties of local and international chocolate varieties. This is your chance to sample a selection of craft and artisan chocolates before being able to buy a bar or four at the end. They cater to all with vegan, lactose-free, and gluten-free chocolate bars!
Corporate packages are available for any companies looking for team building experiences which include a scavenger hunt, chocolate making workshops and a creative chocolate bar challenge.
If you’re interested in reading more about the chocolate tour they offer, we featured the Chocolatarium in our December 2019 newsletter.
Hopefully you use this guide to create a fun and interesting itinerary for your stay in Edinburgh. We would love to hear which places you visit in Edinburgh during your stay.
