Best Practice Asphalt Training

A  2-part course for all  personnel  involved in the construction and maintenance of asphalt roads.

PART 1   Course content on the day

  • Basic asphalt technology.
  • Why roads fail, recognising the importance of best practice in new construction and maintenance.
  • Selecting the surface course – HRA, SMA or asphaltic concrete
  • The range of maintenance options and guidance on what to use where.
  • New roads, requirements of the granular foundations and each new asphalt pavement layer.
  • Production and transport of asphalts, including what sometimes goes wrong.
  •   “Warm” and “cold” asphalts, what are they and are they as good as hot asphalt?
  • Site preparation work including adjusting ironwork, planing, bond coats and tack coats.
  • Asphalt paving
  • Compaction and joints.
  • Detailing for strip widening – widening from single track to twin track
  • Sampling and testing

The day will include Group exercises for delegates, dealing with real life problems.

PART 2  –  Subsequently, tutorials will be sent to each delegate, covering the following,  at no extra cost.  The tutor will act as an e-mail mentor assisting delegates with these as necessary.

  • Overlaying concrete and reflective cracking
  • Where modified bitumens really are necessary
  • Dealing with tar
  • Recycled asphalt
  • Use of asphalt in SUDS

Course overview

Experienced delegates polish up their knowledge of new materials, processes and specification requirements and who want to ensure they are familiar with recent changes in materials and specification clauses.

Less experienced delegates gain a good grounding in asphalt technology and current best practices in both road construction and maintenance.

Course Location

This course will be run at the Edinburgh Training and Conference Venue, which is situated in the centre of Edinburgh, just 5 minutes walk from Waverley Station and close to major bus routes, including the airport bus. Discounted parking is available at the St John's Hill NCP Car Park. Our training rooms are light and spacious, all are air conditioned with natural daylight.

Complimentary breakfast and lunch will provided, as well as tea and coffee throughout the day. If you've got any special dietary requirements just let us know, ideally in advance, and we will be pleased to cater for them. Our team will be there on the day to make sure everything goes smoothly.
