For all you chocolate lovers, this local business feature will give your day a Boost. Take some Timeout your Bounty-ful lives, pay a Daim to jump on a Double Decker and come revel at the newly opened Chocolatarium. I’ll stop the chocolate bar puns before I get too off Topic…
Tucked away on Cranston Street, halfway down the Royal Mile, is Edinburgh’s newest chocolate haven with the biggest selection of Scottish craft chocolate.
Maybe there aren’t chocolate rivers or Oompa-Loompas, but this is a chocolate experience you won’t forget. The Chocolatarium is a new and rather niche shop that offers an amazing Chocolate Tour Experience. Jenny, the founder, spent time in the Ecuadorian rainforest, fascinated by the lives of the cocoa farmers and the entire chocolate production process. She returned home to Edinburgh and noticed the lack of hands-on tours educating those on chocolate.
A World of Pure Imagination
Without spoiling too much of the tour, it’s split into three sections; learning, making and tasting. Before you’re led off to learn about the chocolate-making process, you will be offered a warm tasty pot of melted chocolate, perfect for these cold winter days!
Both Jenny and Anika are extremely engaging and knowledgeable about the entire process between the chocolate tree through production until a chocolate bar reaches your hands. The Chocolatarium help raise awareness and place importance making sure their products do not contain palm oil and are ethically sourced.
Through in the following room are several tables are lined with a selection of around 25 sweet treats that can be used when you make your own chocolate bar! But first, you’ll be shown exactly how chocolate is made from bean to the edible chocolate you love.
After being teased with the smell of chocolate and making your own, you’re taken into the tasting room – on the wall, there is a huge flavour wheel that depicts all the different tastes you can get with chocolate, very similar to wine tasting notes. Try and distinguish which flavour notes you pick up from a few sample pieces of chocolate, everyone tastes something different!
Saving the best for last, this room also welcomes you with the sight of over 30 varieties of chocolate, the best part is you’ll have the chance to sample a few! Some favourites are the gin & tonic or Guinness chocolates.
Jenny and Anika are both so enthusiastic, passionate and constantly smiling – but who wouldn’t when you work surrounded by chocolate.
While only a few months old, the Chocolatarium are smashing it. It’s perfect for date night, the entire family and they even offer private tours and can accommodate corporate parties. Vegan people seeking lactose-free treats will enjoy the milk-free options !
The Chocolatarium were very generous and donated a prize of Tour of Chocolate for 4 people towards our most recent Breast Cancer Now Wear It Pink raffle. Made extra special by being printed as Golden Tickets!!
